On the internet, there are plenty of ways you can easily help worthy charities by playing games, clicking on a website, or proofreading a single page of a book. Here’s a list of charities that I like – and support – myself, checked for accuracy and currentness in January of 2010.

Note that almost all of these sites raise their money by having you view advertisements, so if you have an ad-blocker on your browser or if you block/turn off images, JavaScript, or Flash please turn those back on before using these sites or your actions won’t be counted!

Games For Charity

Online games which raise money for charities:

FreeRice.com

Give free rice to hungry people by playing a simple game that increases your knowledge. Rice is distributed by the UN World Food Program. The default topic is vocabulary but if you follow the “Change Subject” link there are many others available. All of them that I have tried should be accessible to screen readers except the “Famous paintings” and “Identify countries on the map” ones.

HelpThirst.com

A short-term memory training game that gets you to memorise numbers from 1 to 10 digits long and type them back into the game to earn cups of water. Clean Water is distributed through World Vision.

Miscellaneous

These aren’t games, but they’re small things you can do daily for charities .

Gutenberg Distributed Proofreaders

Once you’re signed up you can proofread just a single page at a time. It’s a quick thing you can do that’s good for the world and it’s rather enjoyable I think. Also, you get to read great old books as you go. Proof readers are needed for multiple languages, not just English.

Care2 Daily Action

The Daily Action varies, some are just to read an article, some are signing a petition or committing to take an action in your own life. By doing the daily action you earn “butterflies” which can be redeemed for donations that Care2 makes to charity.

Click To Give Sites

These sites depend on you viewing advertisements, and some also offer search engine access, shops with things to buy, and other ways you can raise money for the site. I have noted in brackets after the name for those sites where the proceeds are directed to only one country.

The Rainforest Site

Funding for food and care is paid by site sponsors and distributed to animals in need at the Fund for Animals’ renowned animal sanctuaries including Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Texas and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in California, pet shelters supported by the Petfinder Foundation, North Shore Animal League, and other worthy animal care facilities supported by the GreaterGood.org foundation.

The Literacy Site

So here is my wishlist, not censored for price or impossibility or anything … and not really in any particular order. They’re all things I want .

Visits! Bring dinner. Bring a book. Bring your laptop. Bring news of your life. Or bring your knitting and just sit and “be” here for a while. Talking is optional, but nice!

Running around for me. Having somebody I could call and say “Could you pick up a blah from the frob shop this week?” is insanely useful. A booklet with “running around” coupons would be greatly treasured.

Adopt me a fairy penguin. How could I not want this? Penguin Foundation lets you “adopt” a fairy penguin for a year!

I definitely need an Engineered By Firefly bumper sticker for my new wheelchair!

I have a great idea for a mural that I could paint in the bathroom, but I need a hand with design and somebody who can stand on a chair to paint it!

A 3-bedroom house in Nunawadding/similar with a garden at the back and all on one level for wheelchair access (I don’t ask for much, do I?).

Small animal/etc statues for my garden. Anything from an inch to a foot or two high is fun! The Whitehouse Gardens statues look lovely, for example.

I’d really really like a Kindle DX for reading ebooks in comfort. It needs a leather case too.

Big planters to put in my garden and on the concrete near the garden. Have to be large enough not to dry out in less than a day in the summer sun, so at least 30cm diameter. What I really crave are a claw-footed bathtub (slightly broken would be fine for a planter!) and some of those half-barrel wooden planters with metal banding.

Believe it or not I actually want tea towels! Does this mean I’m a real grownup now? Ikea AGGI and Julie’s Cosmos Connection are bright and fun looking. Lots of the Rodriquez ones are good too, the ones with smaller repeating designs – since mostly tea towels are folded up on the oven door I like smaller patterns rather than one big picture!

A nice set of surround-sound speakers which I can connect to my computer would be great. Bluetooth speakers would be best since snaking cables around is hard.

Set of very small desert spoons. My favorite ever spoon is a smaller-than-usual desert spoons plundered from an airline meal, and I would very much like more of them.

I’d love some Sugru to make things with!

A classic poet shirt like this one, or two (or three, or …), would be really good. Probably in a smart grey or black colour instead of white though – I hate wearing white. I’m a short 5’2″ person with a 110cm bust and 100cm waist, and I like clothes which are somewhat oversized so they’re loose and draped.

Other mandarin-collared shirts in the same sizes and colours too.

Build one of these v3 Window Farms for my big windows and help me plant it!

Kit to attach a wrist strap/lanyard to my iPhone 4, the iPoddities iPhone 4s kit looks like the best.

A Digifit Total Health Bundle costs a bunch but would help me monitor my health status

I do love this Take It Apart T-shirt, size XL.

There are also a bunch of things on my ThinkGeek Wish List, none of which actually have to be bought at ThinkGeek but all of which it’s easy to get there.

- Ricky
